With the many horrific animal stories we’ve been hearing lately due to hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and those currently pending (Maria and Jose), it bears reminding that its always better to be prepared – even if you think it can’t happen to you. Perhaps you don’t live in a hurricane-prone area, but you might live in a tornado area, or an earthquake area, or a part of the country easily victimized by fires – in all these cases having a plan and being prepared in advance can not only make getting to safety faster and easier – it could potentially save your life and the life of your pet.
We recently came across a great Pet Evacuation Kit list from the AVMA for pet owners to assemble and have ready in advance of emergencies in case the need for a rapid evacuation occurs. It covers such items as Food/Medicine, First Aid Kit, Sanitation, Documents and Travel Supplies; many items that are not thought of in the midst of an emergency situation.
Do yourself, your family, and your pet a favor – review the list at the attached link and take some time this week to make sure that your Pet Evacuation Kit is ready to go. Hopefully you’ll never need it, but your family and your pet, will be more secure if you have it.
