Love Camping With Your Pet?

Michigan’s state parks and campgrounds have long been pet-friendly, but a pilot project this fall will expand the options for people who want to camp with their dogs or cats.

Beginning Nov. 1, five state parks are opening some of their cabins and lodges to people traveling with dogs or cats. It’s part of a Department of Natural Resources attempt to respond to campers’ requests that more spaces allow companion animals.

Currently, leashed pets are allowed in campsites, but cannot accompany people who stay in a state park’s cabins, lodges, teepees or yurts.

As of this fall, up to two dogs or cats will be allowed in some cabins or lodges at the following: Harrisville State Park, Sleepy Hollow State Park, Lime Island State ParkLeelanau State Park and Cheboygan State Park.
